Are you tired of paying high-energy bills? If so, Capital Home Services L.L.C. may be able to assist you in lowering your monthly energy costs. Our staff uses advanced technology to include infrared camera thermography to see inside the walls and ceilings of your house to determine areas of potential heat loss (see our section on Infrared Scans).
Our staff is trained in assessing homes for energy loss. We can provide you with a 4-Point analysis of your home which includes looking for air leaks, improper or inadequate insulation levels, energy efficiency of your appliances, and other energy saving recommendations (see our Energy Tune Up page).
1) Locating Air Leaks: First, our trained inspectors will make a list of obvious air leaks (drafts). The potential energy savings from reducing drafts in a home may range from 5 to 30% per year, and the home is generally much more comfortable afterward.
2) Insulation: Our staff can determine if your attics and walls are properly insulated. Heat loss through the ceiling and walls in your home could be very large if the insulation levels are less than the recommended minimum. When your house was built, the builder likely installed the amount of insulation recommended at that time. Given today's energy prices (and future prices that will probably be higher), the of insulation level might be inadequate, especially if you have an older home. While inspecting the attic, we will check to see if there is a vapor barrier under the attic insulation. Large amounts of moisture can reduce the effectiveness of insulation and promote structural damage.
3) Heating/Cooling Equipment: We will visually inspect heating and cooling systems. Our inspectors will look for energy efficiency ratings, proper drafting, adequate air sealing of your ducts (visible areas only), and insulation of any ducts or pipes that travel through unheated spaces. An insulation R-Value of 6 is the recommended minimum.
4)101 Ways to Save Money: As we inspect your home, we will show you ways to save money on your energy bills. Our inspectors will provide you with a list of 101 suggestions that have been shown to reduce energy costs to homeowners.
For example: Energy for lighting accounts for about 10% of your electric bill. Examine the wattage size of the light bulbs in your house. You may have 100-watt (or larger) bulbs where 60 or 75 watts would do. You should also consider compact fluorescent lamps for areas where lights are on for hours at a time. Your electric utility may offer rebates or other incentives for purchasing energy-efficient lamps.
Did you know that the average indoor water use in a typical single-family home is almost 70 gallons per person per day. Dripping faucets can waste about 2,000 gallons of water each year. Leaky toilets can waste as much as 200 gallons each day. These problems are usually simple and inexpensive to repair and can save you money.
